Death Note, vol. 1 by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata,
Book description: Light Yagami is an ace student with great prospects - and bored out of his mind! But all that changes when he finds the Death Note, and notebook dropped by a rougue shinigami death god. Any human whose name is written in the notebook dies, and now Light has vowed to use the power of the Death Note to rid the world of evil. But when criminals begin dropping dead, the authorities send the legendary detective L to track down the killer. With L hot on his heels, will Light lose sight of his noble goal... or his life?
Review: Finally a new manga that I don’t feel like I’ve read its plot a dozen other times. The story of this one is interesting for so many reasons. The moral ambiguity of Light’s decisions, his conflict with an enemy he doesn’t know, and his strange relationship with the Shinigami all create a layered plot that had me eagerly turning the pages. Light is a rarity in manga, an non-whiney teenage main character. I’m thankful for that because the whiney teenager epidemic has caused me to give up on many otherwise enjoyable manga. The art in this title is fantastic too. I can’t wait to see where this series is headed.
